From Glyn to Glen: Students leaving Wales for Scotland

Dr Owain James

1,105 students from Wales enrolled at universities in Scotland in the 2021/22 academic year. But is this a significant number?

At first glance, this may not seem like a huge number of people. After all, there are around three times more students from Wales in Liverpool, and four times more in Bristol - English cities far exceeding the number for the entirety of Scotland.

But I would argue that this number is comparatively large, and certainly significant.

Firstly, around 60% of these students from Wales are studying at universities that are in the Russell Group or Sutton Trust 30, with the three most popular choices being The University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow and University of St Andrews. These are internationally recognised, high-performing institutions. So even if you think the quantity of the students leaving Wales for Scotland is low, the quality of those leaving is undoubtedly high.

Secondly, the number is relatively high when you compare the stats in reverse. Only 420 students from Scotland came to Wales for study in the same period - so less than half the number from Wales to Scotland. This is despite Scotland producing 75% more students than Wales does. There is clearly a mismatch here.

So what is the message? Compared with Scotland, students from Wales are migrators.

Cofrestrodd 1,105 o fyfyrwyr o Gymru mewn prifysgolion yn yr Alban ym mlwyddyn academaidd 2021/22. Ond a yw hwn yn nifer sylweddol?

Ar yr olwg gyntaf, efallai na fydd hyn yn ymddangos fel nifer enfawr o bobl. Wedi'r cyfan, mae tua thair gwaith yn fwy o fyfyrwyr o Gymru yn Lerpwl, a phedair gwaith yn fwy ym Mryste - dinasoedd Lloegr yn llawer uwch na'r nifer ar gyfer yr Alban gyfan.

Ond byddwn yn dadlau bod y nifer hwn yn gymharol fawr, ac yn sicr yn arwyddocaol.

Yn gyntaf, mae tua 60% o'r myfyrwyr hyn o Gymru yn astudio mewn prifysgolion sydd yn y Grŵp Russell neu Ymddiriedolaeth Sutton 30, a'r tri dewis mwyaf poblogaidd yw Prifysgol Caeredin, Prifysgol Glasgow a Phrifysgol St Andrews. Mae'r rhain yn sefydliadau sy'n perfformio'n dda ac a gydnabyddir yn rhyngwladol. Felly hyd yn oed os ydych chi'n meddwl bod nifer y myfyrwyr sy'n gadael Cymru am yr Alban yn isel, mae ansawdd y rhai sy'n gadael yn ddi-os yn uchel.

Yn ail, mae'r nifer yn gymharol uchel pan fyddwch chi'n cymharu'r ystadegau y ffordd arall. Dim ond 420 o fyfyrwyr o’r Alban ddaeth i Gymru i astudio yn yr un cyfnod, felly llai na hanner y nifer o Gymru i’r Alban - a hynny er bod yr Alban wedi cynhyrchu 75% yn fwy o fyfyrwyr na Chymru. Mae'r patrwm yn bell o fod yn gyfartal.

Felly beth yw'r neges? O gymharu â'r Alban, mae myfyrwyr o Gymru yn fudwyr.
