The most popular subjects at Wales' Universities

Dr Owain James

Ever wondered what the most popular areas of study are at Wales' universities? You can see what the top three subject areas are for each of Wales' universities in descending order in the graph below. 👇

This data is from the 2020/21 academic year, and includes all years of study and degree types. This isn't limited to people from Wales but includes all students studying within Wales wherever they are from. So this data shows what people from all over the world are coming to Wales to study, and the relative strengths of Wales' universities.

A lot of this is as I would have expected and sometimes reflects the historic strengths of these institutions. For instance:

- 'Medicine and dentistry' for Cardiff University  ✅

- 'Engineering and technology' for Swansea University✅

- 'Biological and sport sciences' for Cardiff Metropolitan University ✅

- 'Design, and creative and performing arts' for University of South Wales ✅

But there are perhaps some surprises here for me - for instance, I might have expected 'Education and Teaching' to feature among the top subject areas for University of Wales Trinity Saint David, and perhaps not #1 for Aberystwyth University. Nor did I realise that 'Biological and sport sciences' was so popular for Prifysgol Bangor, and 'Social sciences' for Wrexham University.

Does anything stand out for you? Any surprises? And do you think different areas should be higher up for some of these unis in the future?

[As a point of information, this data doesn't refer to individual courses, but to groups of related subjects (using the 'Common Aggregation Hierarchy', to be technical). This breakdown has the benefit of giving a wider sense of the sort of subjects that are most popular - but since these aren't specific courses these groups are wide-ranging and 'generic'.]

Ydych chi erioed wedi meddwl beth yw'r meysydd astudio mwyaf poblogaidd ym mhrifysgolion Cymru? Gallwch weld beth yw'r tri maes pwnc mwyaf poblogaidd ar gyfer pob prifysgol yng Nghymru mewn trefn ddisgynnol yn y graff isod. 👇

Daw’r data hwn o flwyddyn academaidd 2020/21, ac mae’n cynnwys pob blwyddyn o astudio a mathau o radd. Nid yw hyn yn gyfyngedig i bobl o Gymru ond mae'n cynnwys yr holl fyfyrwyr sy'n astudio yng Nghymru o ble bynnag maen nhw'n dod. Felly mae'r data hwn yn dangos yr hyn y mae pobl o bob rhan o'r byd yn dod i Gymru i'w astudio, a chryfderau cymharol prifysgolion Cymru.

Mae llawer o hyn fel y byddwn wedi disgwyl ac weithiau'n adlewyrchu cryfderau hanesyddol y sefydliadau hyn. Er enghraifft:

- ‘Meddygaeth a deintyddiaeth’ ar gyfer Prifysgol Caerdydd  ✅

- ‘Peirianneg a thechnoleg’ ar gyfer Prifysgol Abertawe✅

- ‘Gwyddorau biolegol a chwaraeon’ ar gyfer Prifysgol Metropolitan Caerdydd ✅

- ‘Dylunio, a’r celfyddydau creadigol a pherfformio’ ar gyfer Prifysgol De Cymru ✅

Ond efallai bod rhai syrpreisys yma i mi – er enghraifft, efallai y byddwn i wedi disgwyl i ‘Addysg ac Addysgu’ ymddangos ymhlith y prif feysydd pwnc ar gyfer Prifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant, ac efallai ddim yn #1 i Brifysgol Aberystwyth. Ni sylweddolais ychwaith fod 'gwyddorau biolegol a chwaraeon' mor boblogaidd ym Mhrifysgol Bangor, a 'Gwyddorau cymdeithasol' ac ym Mhrifysgol Wrecsam.

A oes unrhyw beth yn sefyll allan i chi? Unrhyw bethau annisgwyl? Ac a ydych chi'n meddwl y dylai gwahanol feysydd fod yn uwch ar gyfer rhai o'r prifysgolion hyn yn y dyfodol?

[Fel pwynt gwybodaeth, nid yw'r data hwn yn cyfeirio at gyrsiau unigol, ond at grwpiau o bynciau cysylltiedig (gan ddefnyddio'r ' Hierarchaeth Cydgasglu Cyffredin', i fod yn dechnegol). Mae gan y dadansoddiad hwn y fantais o roi ymdeimlad ehangach o'r math o bynciau sydd fwyaf poblogaidd - ond gan nad yw'r rhain yn gyrsiau penodol mae'r grwpiau hyn yn eang ac yn 'gyffredinol'.]
